The first round of the Guards F5000 championship, held at Oulton Park, was won by Peter Gethin in a Church Farm Racing McLaren M10A Chevrolet, at an average speed of 106mph.
Second place went to David Hobbs' TS Research and Development Surtees TS5, followed by Keith Holland in an Alan Fraser Lola T142 Chevrolet.
Gethin set a new outright lap record of 108.99mph. Mike Hailwood drove a Paul Hawkins Racing Lola T142 but retired on lap 20 with a broken driveshaft
